The Difference Between Wellhead and Christmas Tree

Oilfield Xmas tree and Wellhead are two distinct devices but with several things in common. For instance, they are both of great importance of oil and natural gas production; Valves and other equipment appear in both devices to help control and guide the flow of materials. Out of their similarities, they are often used as the same thing. But, they are two distinct pieces of equipment as mentioned before. Xmas Tree
The Christmas tree, which usually constitutes of valves, spools, choke coils and accessories, is named out of it looks like the decorated tree for Christmas celebration. There are five valves in a Christmas tree: the Kill Wing valve, the Swab valve, the production wing valve, the upper master valve, and the lower master valve. Christmas could be found in a wide range of wells including oil wells, gas wells, water disposal wells, water injection wells, gas injection wells, and several other types of wells. In the process of production of materials -- usually oil or natural gas, the Christmas tree there is used to regulate the rate of the flow into and out of the well.

Other functions of Xmas tree cover well intervention, pressure relief, chemical injection, tree and well monitoring points, flow composition and rate, valve and choke position feedback, connection points.

Wellhead
Wellhead assembly components include heads, hangers, spools, and a series of seals. During drilling and production, the wellhead is necessary to control the pressure. Without wellhead, you cannot utilize a Christmas tree. However, you can use a wellhead without a Christmas tree during drilling operations. Additional functions of a wellhead include: allows safe and controlled access to a live well; serves as a point to suspend casing and tubing strings; serves as a connection surface pressure-control equipment.
