Industrial Valve Actuator: Manual Actuators,Hydraulic Actuators,Electric Actuators

Actuators are devices that help workers in the pipeline to drive the valves. The power could be electric, air (pneumatic) or flow (hydraulic). Actuators have two main functions: linear and rotary. So, let's get into the common types of valve actuators.

Manual Actuators

These actuators, also known as manual actuators, usually require workers to run a wheel or lever. However, due to the high pressure inside the pipes, people usually dislike manual actuators because they are difficult to operate. However, manual actuators do have their advantages. For example, if you need a precise valve position, a manual actuator is the ideal option. Taval manual gate valve is widely used for oilfield manifolds.

Pneumatic and Hydraulic Actuators

Another frequent actuator is pneumatic, or air operated. However, users need to choose which they want, linear or rotary pneumatic? Pneumatic linear actuators use a compressor or a hand pump to move the piston throughout the pipe. On the other hand, rotary pneumatic actuators still use a compressor. However, the actuator will use an oscillating rotary motion instead of a piston. Hydraulic actuators are similar to pneumatic actuators, except for the power source.

Electric Actuators

Finally, electric actuators are increasingly popular in the oil and gas industry. Cleanliness and reliability are the factors people prefer electric actuators  In other words, you don't have to worry about compressed air or oil to drive the actuator. The linear version of electric actuators convert electricity to torque through the movement of screws.

Before selecting an actuator, you have to figure out the purpose of the actuator. For example, certain actuators may work well in one situation but be inefficient in another.
